Discussion Post Wordle

I thought it would be fun to create a Wordle of the online discussion posts I wrote for the class I took last semester on researching teaching writing. I somewhat randomly chose about 75% of my posts for this and I think it turned out really cool!

My Cute Piano Student

Earlier this week I was teaching one of my 5 year old piano students in her home. She had been playing with this little toy (it's a happy blood drop) and had tied a bathrobe belt to it to use as a leash. Here it is where she tied it up to the piano (I'm assuming so it wouldn't run off during her lesson :)

Satchels from Urban Outfitters

As a piano teacher, I often find myself hauling quite a bit of material with me from lesson to lesson. I decided to use some of my birthday money to find a stylish bag that could easily fit several binders and music books along with plenty of pockets for pens, theory games and other assorted tools of the trade.

These were a few of the bags I was deciding between:

This is the Colorblock Satchel from Urban Outfitters.

Pros: Roomy pockets, faux leather bottom and sides

Cons: Over $70 with tax, and a little smaller than I would like.

This is the Cooperative Linen Carry-All satchel from Urban Outfitters.

Pros: roomy with lots of pockets.

Cons: over $60 with tax.

This is the Canvas Bucket Bag from Urban Outfitters.

Pros: Sleek, plenty of pockets, and a sturdy faux leather bottom. Also less expensive than the other two bags.

Cons: Material could stain easily.

In the end I decided to go with the Canvas Bucket Bag :)

I've been so happy with it so far! I think it looks much more stylish than the free (and quickly falling apart) totebag I was using.

All the pockets have helped me become much more organized as well.

Funny Things My Students Say

I am a piano teacher, and teach a wide range of students ranging in age from 4-89. Here are a sampling of the gems I regularly hear:

"I'm allergic to stickers."

-The response I got when I asked a 4 yo student why he didn't want his weekly sticker.

"Teacher, Can I count your teeth?"

"Uh, no."

"Why?'

"Because I have a mint in my mouth" - also because that's kind of gross, but I didn't tell him that

"I really want a mint too, but my mommy says only girls can have mints."

- Ian, age 4

"I really like to play 'slurbs' because they look like swords or smiley faces. Also because 'slurb' is a funny word."

- Powell, an imaginative 6 year old, the day we learned to play slurs.

And finally a gem from my 89 yo student:

"It's a good thing you went into music and not art, because I have no idea what you are trying to draw."

-reaffirming my career choice after I tried to draw a pair of eyes on the score to remind him to look carefully at the notes.
